The Seagull AFib blood pressure monitor functions like a standard blood pressure monitor, but uniquely, it can also test for atrial fibrillation using the AFib function.

Atrial fibrillation, AFib – what does it mean?

Atrial fibrillation is a specific type of arrhythmia that refers to an abnormal rhythm in the atria of the heart. Atrial fibrillation causes the heart's atria to beat rapidly and irregularly, without the electrical impulse reaching the ventricles themselves, which therefore do not contract as they should. As a result, blood is not pumped efficiently, which can lead to the formation of small blood clots in the atria. There is a risk that these small blood clots may be carried along with the bloodstream and, in the worst case, lodge as blood clots elsewhere in the body.
The primary prevention of blood clots is often lifelong treatment with blood-thinning medication. If a cause for the atrial fibrillation can be identified, it must be treated.

Symptoms of atrial fibrillation vary greatly from person to person. They can range from an irregular pulse, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, restlessness/anxiety, and increased urination during episodes – and some people do not notice it at all.

Atrial fibrillation can be intermittent or constant. It often starts by occurring periodically but can become constant over time. This device cannot replace a cardiological examination, but its purpose is to detect a potential issue as early as possible.

Blood pressure monitor with atrial fibrillation function

The atrial fibrillation function can be used independently of the blood pressure measurement, but can also be performed at the same time. The device is easy to use, and the results of the two measurements are read quickly and easily on their respective displays.
When using the atrial fibrillation screening, the measurement is taken directly from the finger, which is simply placed under the white flap. After the measurement is complete, the result is clearly shown on the lower display. Please note that the atrial fibrillation screening takes longer than the blood pressure measurement. Do not remove your finger until a result appears on the lower display.
If the AFib symbol appears on the lower display, an abnormal rhythm has been detected in the heart's atria. This is measured on the finger based on tissue blood volume caused by the pulse wave. If the AFib symbol appears during multiple measurements, we recommend that you contact your doctor.
‍
To determine blood pressure, a measurement is taken using the cuff on the upper arm. The included cuff fits upper arms from 23-43 cm. The measurement is quick and gentle, with automatic cuff inflation. Afterward, the blood pressure is displayed both as a number and a color-coded indication. The same display shows the pulse, date, time, and whether an irregular heartbeat has been detected. If the irregular heartbeat icon appears on the same display as the blood pressure after the measurement, it indicates an irregular heart rhythm.

Irregular heartbeat and atrial fibrillation are not the same thing, and the two measurements on the device are independent of each other. Irregular heartbeat is a broad, general term for an abnormal heart rhythm, whereas atrial fibrillation is a specific condition. Irregular heartbeat is measured based on your pulse via the cuff; if the irregular heartbeat symbol appears on the display, it means that heartbeats have been measured that are either 25% faster or slower than the average heart rhythm during the measurement. This is a snapshot in time.
‍
The blood pressure monitor can store up to 240 blood pressure measurements, including AFib screenings, for 2 different users. If more measurements are taken, the oldest will be deleted. Measurements from atrial fibrillation screenings without a blood pressure measurement are not saved.
‍
To save battery, the monitor turns off automatically after one and a half minutes if it has not been used. New batteries provide enough power for approximately 200 measurements.

It is possible to purchase a power adapter so that the device always has power. Buy the power adapter here.

How to use the device

Note: Blood pressure can be affected by food, drink, smoking, and physical activity. Therefore, it is recommended that you measure your blood pressure at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking, or consuming caffeinated beverages. It is also a good idea to sit quietly for 5 minutes before taking a measurement.
‍
How to position the cuff:
● Apply the cuff to a bare arm, with no clothing underneath.
● Note: Use only the original cuff provided with the device, as using others may result in incorrect readings.
● Place your arm through the cuff opening and position the cuff on your upper arm, 2-3 cm above the elbow crease. It should be snug enough that you can just fit 1-2 fingers between the cuff and your upper arm.
● Secure the cuff with the Velcro fastener.

Before starting the measurement:
● Sit on a chair with back support, keep your legs uncrossed, and place your arm on a table so that the cuff is at heart level.
● Sit in a relaxed position and place the arm with the cuff on the table, palm facing up.
● Place a finger from your opposite hand on the AFib sensor.
‍
Starting the measurement:
● Once you are sure your finger is positioned correctly and you are ready, press the start/stop button.
● All symbols will appear on the screen first, followed by "00". The device is now ready and will automatically inflate to a pressure level suited to you.
● During deflation, your blood pressure and pulse will be determined. The pulse symbol will flash in time with your heartbeats. It may take a little longer for the device to evaluate for rhythm disturbances via the AFib sensor, so please remain still until it is completely finished.

Please note that the atrial fibrillation screening takes longer than the blood pressure measurement. Do not remove your finger until a result appears on the lower display.

● When the measurement is fully complete, your results will be shown on the screens.
● On the top display, you can read your blood pressure and pulse; an icon will appear if an irregular heartbeat has been detected. The lower display will show a waveform, and the text "ok" or "AFib" will appear. If the AFib symbol appears during multiple measurements, we recommend that you contact your doctor.

Measurement with AFib function without blood pressure monitoring

It is possible to use the AFib function without measuring blood pressure. During such a measurement, data will not be saved.

● To use only the AFib function, place your finger on the AFib sensor area and then press start/stop. The display will show the user who most recently used the device. This is irrelevant as the measurement will not be saved.
● The device will show the measured pulse, and when the measurement is finished, the screen will show the AFib symbol with "ok" or "AFib".

Cleaning

The cuff and the device can be wiped with a dry cloth or a damp cloth wrung out in mild dish soap, and must then be wiped with a dry cloth again. The cuff can be disinfected with a 75% alcohol wipe if necessary. Water must not be poured onto the device, and harsh cleaning agents or chemicals must not be used.

The device must not be exposed to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or stored in damp or dusty environments.

Calibration

According to the Danish Medicines Agency and the manufacturer, it is not necessary to calibrate the blood pressure monitor if it is used for home use. However, if it has been dropped or subjected to impact, this can lead to inaccurate readings, and calibration would then be a good idea.

If you wish to have your blood pressure monitor calibrated, this can be done by us, and we can ensure that it measures correctly.
Calibration costs 250 DKK including VAT and can be purchased here.

Sources of error

If you are experiencing error messages or inaccurate readings, there may be several reasons for this:

‍● Is the cuff applied correctly? Not too loose, not too tight, 2-3 cm above the elbow crease.
● Were you sitting correctly during the measurement? Without crossing your legs, relaxed in a chair with back support, arm resting on a table with the cuff at heart level.
● Were you sitting still during the measurement? You must not move or talk during the measurement. It is important to be as relaxed as possible.
● Have you recently been active, eaten/drunk, or smoked? Blood pressure can be affected by food, drink, smoking, and activity. Therefore, it is recommended to measure your blood pressure at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking, or consuming caffeinated beverages. It is also a good idea to have sat quietly for 5 minutes before taking the measurement.
● Is the cuff connected correctly to the device? Check that the cuff is connected properly.
● Is your finger placed correctly on the AFib sensor area? Check that your finger covers the entire sensor area. The finger should be placed 'lightly' on it.
● Did you move your finger before the measurement was finished? Let your finger rest on the sensor area until the result appears on the display.

If you find that the cuff is becoming porous or the connection between the tube and the device is not airtight, this can cause error messages or inaccurate results. It is possible to purchase and replace spare parts so you can continue to enjoy your device for many years to come.

If your device has been dropped or subjected to impact, this can affect the readings, in which case calibration would be a good idea. You can read more about calibration here.
